Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the project was formed to bring older and younger members of the local community together to explore, share and record memories and stories about the heritage of Newhaven.
With the assistance of the Living Memories Association and the City of Edinburgh Council’s Museum and Galleries Department, the children from Victoria school were encouraged to consider appropriate items for discussion with the original Newhaveners. Items were “tested” on those that gather in the Haven Centre at Newhaven Church.
Resources were created on three core themes — Fishwives and fishing; Victoria Primary school and its role in Newhaven; and Newhaven and wartime. Local artist Jan Bee Brown designed large packets, based on the “pooches” of the Newhaven fishwives, to carry the themed items.
These will be used by the school for years to come and loaned freely to other schools. The displays in the Wee Museum will be refreshed to complement these themes.
A more general Reminiscence pocket was also produced which contains a number of items from each theme. This will be used in care homes and with community groups to stimulate memories of the past.
Volunteers will be trained on how to use them, coming into school and going to community groups to bring stories to life. If you would like to be involved, please contact email@example.com
