NEWHAVEN COMMUNITY CHOIR
The Newhaven Community Choir is not affiliated to Newhaven Heritage in any way although both organisations
share the same enthusiasm for the history of choral singing in Newhaven.
CHORAL SINGING IS NOT ONLY FUN IT DOES YOU GOOD
It’s a proven fact that singing a chorus is more fun when we are surrounded by friends, belting it out at the top of our lungs.
Humans are wired for rhythmic togetherness; from choral singers, musicians, dancers, to rowers, science has shown that we bond best when we are making music with each other.
Why?
Studies show that choral singing improves our mood, with a decrease in stress, depression and anxiety. These effects are often attributed to the deeper breathing associated with singing, that is also used in meditation. These benefits are enhanced in a group setting, compared to singing alone. Singing in a group offers us a sense of belonging to something bigger than ourselves. It helps us feel that we are needed by the larger community.
Beyond these psychological effects, our physical health is also impacted for the better: lower blood pressure, increased blood oxygen saturation, elevated immunity, higher pain threshold, stronger respiratory muscles, and less stuttering. Music making produces measurable changes in the brain. These changes positively impact our ability to heal after strokes by assisting the formation of alternative pathways around damaged brain tissue. All of these factors can lead to a deeper sense of well-being and overall happiness.
Scientists now recognised that the experience of making music together provides a deep sense of pleasure not just for the observers, but for the participants, as well. If one voice, instrument, or dancer alone is amazing, a group of performers is more so.
Research shows that this emotion engenders an enhanced sense of altruism. It seems to shift our focus from our own narrow view to that of our common humanity. Those who report more pleasure in their lives have been shown to be more generous, more ethical, and more helpful towards others. Perhaps it:s because we feel more comfortable and happier in our own skin?
THE NEWHAVEN COMMUNITY CHOIR
The Choir is an audition free group of people who come together simply because they enjoy singing. They are a friendly bunch of folk of mainly women but male voices are particularly welcome as a consequence in order to improve the tonality and harmony.
If you feel like having a sing, pop along to the David Lloyd Gym at Newhaven on a Wednesday evening. Rehearsals begin at 7.30pm until 8.30pm. A donation is asked for each week to cover costs like room hire, etc.
Not only will your larynx and abdomen muscles be exercised, we feel that your chuckle muscles will too.
CORONAVIRUS FOOTNOTE: Because of the current essentila policy of social distancing which was then followed by lockdown, the choir has had to abandon its time together. If you are interested in being part of the choir when this is all over, contact the website at the email address below and you will be put in touch with a choir member who will keep you informed.
