This website celebrates the people that made the history and the people that keep the memories alive. Newhaven Heritage, which owns the site, welcomes your contributions of memories and old photographs of Newhaven to add to the records and thereby help create a valuable resource for the generations to come.
However, although no longer the significant fishing village it used to be, Newhaven is still a thriving community in its own right, proud of its heritage and keen to pass on the memories to visitors and for educational purposes alike.
Newhaven Action Group — NAG — was founded in 2010 as a result of Edinburgh Council’s decision to close the popular museum next to the harbour and run by willing volunteers, many of whom were born and bred Newhaveners. NAG was superceded in 2015 by Newhaven Heritage Centre which is recognised as a Scottish registered charity. As the name implies, Newhaven Heritage is working to restore a MUSEUM, together with an EDUCATION CENTRE, CAFE, and COMMUNITY FACILITIES.
Donations to the Newhaven Heritage Centre, a Scottish registered charity, contribute to the fund to create a Heritage Centre and the protection and preservation of the village’s unique history.
Thank you for your support and generosity.
It is the ambitious goal of Newhaven Heritage to raise sufficient funds to purchase, and convert fit for purpose, a suitable property in Newhaven to become the Newhaven Heritage Centre.
The exciting plans for the Centre incorporate :-
There will be disabled access to all areas, of course. The Museum will be an attraction for visitors; the Centre will be a facility for the community and a focus for Newhaven’s ex-pats and their families.
